Dance Fabrique, Sasa African Dance Theater/Afrikan Drum and Melody’s inaugural production written by Sheila McCray, music directed by Saidou Ba, with choreography by Saidou Ba and Sheila McCray. This urban afro ballet Dance Fabrique tells the story of true love set against the backdrop of social and family values in a West African community. Traditional Guinea rhythms, songs and dances provide a colorful and musical narrative which begins with the initial attraction between the young man and woman, the coming together of two families, culminating in the joyful celebration of a marriage party with the bride and groom, family and the entire village. . Director Saidou Ba (Afrikan Drum and Melody) is a veteran master drummer and dancer who has previously toured and performed with The National Ballet of Guinea, Ballets African de Kumba Ndiave, Ballet Afrique Noir, Africa Fare and other local dance companies. Hailing originally from Konadry, West Guinea, Saidou now lives in Miami, working as a performer and active in the community teaching drum and dance at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in Liberty City.
Producer Sheila McCray (Sasa African Dance Theater) is a multimedia artist, who has produced or co-produced cultural events for several years: the 2002 Hip Hospel Jam, the 2004 Kulcha Awards, “Head Above Water”, a Fundraiser for Katrina Survivors (2005).
